Reviews & Questions

Rated 1 out of 5 by from An Apparent Planned Defect Not recommended: You will be stuck with a nightmare―a canoe with poorly engineered seats that will completely break-off at the 90º fold just below where the seats bolt to the hull on each side. While sitting, my rear seat snapped off at that bend. This seems to be a planned defect as the company has failed to take responsibility and issue a recall to fix this design failure. Instead, Pelican wants to sell its customers new seats and cone supports, which cost $40 per replacement seat, $23 for a new cone support, plus $30 for shipping. A $93.00 fix, times 3.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stable workhorse I have had one for years and it has been everywhere from the cottage to canoe camping expeditions. This is not light or fast, and the steering is less than nimble, but it is indestructible and stable. I never feel I have to be so careful with it that I can't have fun. I particularly recommend it for families with kids because it is safe and stable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Value, Slightly Flimsy The addition of a 3rd seat is major plus. The gunwale and the seats are very sturdy. The boat is very light. The skin is a little thin which leads to some buckling and control issues. There is a steel spin which adds structure, but a thicker skin would have been preferable. This boat rides low in the water which makes it inappropriate for the enthusiast. However, it's a large boat that will fit a small family and is perfect for some summer fun on the lake. For the price, it's a good value.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An average canoe, fine for cottagers. I am a fairly experienced canoeist, having been doing so since I was about 14 and canoed the entire Rideau Canal system (Kingston-Ottawa, ON) a couple of times as well as the French River system, Algonquin Park and other noteable (and some not so much) bodies of water. I bought this canoe after having a high-end canoe stolen from my back yard. At any rate, we got the Pelican 15.5 as a cheap alternative to our kayaks. I am finding that serviceable in flat, calm water, anything with a current or waves make me nervous. I have actually had the thing tip right over twice, once with my daughters in it (Life jackets are a must!!) and once with my wife, which luckily, we were fairly close to shore. So I give this canoe a 3 stars. Good if you are on a lake and just out for an afternoon on calm water. This canoe is ideal if you have a cottage and don't have to haul it around on a car or portage. Anything else, and I would recommend you spend a few more $$$ and get a better quality one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first canoe This is my first canoe and I find it a blast to paddle or fish from. A little wobbly when you're sitting still, but rock solid when your paddling. I also love it's maneuvering and speed. She goes!

I’m waiting for this canoe to be stocked in a local sporting goods store (Academy’s) for more than a month. When will it be available?

Asked by: Jk
Pelican is currently still producing canoes, but you would need to be in contact with your local dealers to know when product will be back on shelves. We do not have visibility over stores inventory. Due to the pandemic situation everything is in slow motion.

I have two kids aged 3 and 6. They're slim so I was wondering if they might fit in the middle seat. Also, is it possible to add an extra seat or somehow expand one of the seats for the kids to share? We'll sail only in calm waters.

Asked by: Chris
The important thing is that each person wears his seatbelt and the capacity limit which is 800 lb must not be exceeded.

Where can I find a replacement seat for the front seat. I need both seat and mount. Or is there a different route I can go

You can search for direct part numbers on the website (PSXXX) and locate the parts you need here with a list of compatible parts.

Could additional holes be made in the seat uppers to allow drainage without affecting flotation? Alternatively, could the seat uppers be filled with expanding closed-cell foam to prevent filling with water and provide additional flotation?

Asked by: yipper
I know about the Styrofoam blocks in the support cones since I had to disassemble the seats to get the water out of the seat uppers. The seat uppers are a poor design that could be addressed by additional drainage or additional foam. Don't y'all have the interest and/or capacity to consider improvement?

The seat uppers fill with water when capsized, but the small holes on the underside of the seats on either end are positioned such that only a portion of the water can drain out. Are the hollow portions of the seats intended to provide flotation?

Asked by: yipper
Not in the seats : the additional flotation is actually in the support cone under the seats. They contain styrofoam blocks.

I am interested in purchasing two pelican 15.5 canoes, but was wondering if N epoxy based antifouling coat can be applied below the water line. I know most paint wouldn't stick, but would and epoxy based formula work?

Asked by: Troy
We have not tested our products to be covered with Epoxy, you would have to check with the product manufacturer and ask if Epoxy would stick to a high-density Polyethylene.

I purchased 6 -15.5 canoes from Pelican back in 2011 for my guide service. I’ve been very satisfied with them and would like to purchase an additional 6  15.5 boats. You offered me a discount previously, would you extend a discount again?

Asked by: Fred 62
Please send your request to our customer service department and we will verify for you.
