Reviews & Questions

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great kayak for Ohioans My friend and I bought two of these at the beginning of summer. We spend a lot of time on the water and I feel that I have truthfully put this thing to the test. It's light which is great because I'm a 40 year old woman and I can still load this thing at the end of a long trip. This is very important to me. It's great on lakes and would make a great fishing kayak if I were into fishing. Even better on river trips. Tracks great and can get up stream in a pinch. I think it's an excellent river kayak. 5 stars on the mediocre sized rivers. Next most important thing is that it has enough leg room for my feet and a medium lunch cooler. Go Ohio!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly great! I bought this kayak after my previous 1’s seat was miserable on my back, & took in too much water with the low sides. I went to my local store to try out the seat and see how high the sides were. The Pelican Mustang seat is awesome and comfortable after a full day of kayaking! I only had water enter with my clumsy initial loading. I was worried about a heavy kayak and this kayak glides through the water! I watched the video and read so many reviews. I don’t have much upper body strength and I had zero issues loading or unloading and moving. The Mustang makes days of kayaking relaxing and fun! I bought mine on sale thankfully, & after experiencing it I would pay full price

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Overall Purchased spring 2018 for recreation on local lake. I'm 6'2", 215, age 60 and fit comfortably in the kayak. Like the adjustable footrests and my wife does too at only 5'2". It does drift a little with each stroke but I'm not surprised it doesn't track perfectly at this price level. Haven't fished with it yet so no comment. So far, it does what I wanted. A comfortable, independent way of getting away from the city to get exercise while enjoying the water and weather. Keep it close to your drop off spot; you don't want to carry it too far. :-) Was more surprised it cost $400 for the car rack to carry the kayak. Yes, I would consider purchasing another for my wife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect intermediate kayak I bought an intro kayak from another store but took it back a few days later when I saw this kayak go on sale! I bought two and we both really enjoyed them. We used them on Lake Erie and were impressed with it's tracking and functionality. Pros: The storage case in the back is excellent. The seat is comfortable. The colors are vibrant. The phone holder is convenient. It paddles easily. Cons: The rope for the front handle snapped the first time we lifted it (I have contacted Pelican and am assuming they'll replace it). The drink holder is slanted so you can't hold a can without spilling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite Kayak! I've tried three different kayaks just this year alone and finally found the perfect one for me... The Pelican Mustang 100x is super easy to load and unload in my truck by myself since it weighs less than 40lbs, and covers all of my storage needs. The EcoPod holds so much stuff! I've had two full size towels, 5 water bottles, my lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, and keys/wallet in there with room to spare. The little phone holder is handy and makes it easy to get photos as I'm out on the lake. The padded seat made a day-long trip so much more comfortable than any other kayak I've used. In addition to all those wonderful features, it tracks so nicely in the water, no matter how smooth or choppy. Very happy to have purchased this kayak for all of my future adventures!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value, good fun Bought 2 of these last week. Excellent value. One issue (from first voyage): the front storage compartment (on top, with a strap to hold the lid on) is not in any way waterproof. Anything In there needs to be in a zip-loc bag or a Rubbermaid snap-close container. Other minor issue: The drink holder lays your bottle horizontally between your legs. It would make more sense to have the drink holder hold the drink upright. Other kayaks have that arrangement. The boats track nicely. Not too heavy (easy to get up and on your rooftop J-rack). The boats seem well made. I would recommend these to other potential buyers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for kids I'm a beginner kayaker, and this was a great starter kayak. It has everything I need for storage, stable, adjustable foot pegs, comfortable, lightweight (although heavier than my kids' Pelican Trailblazer 100). I'm a woman but fairly strong, so I can easily transport it myself. When I put the back seats down in my car, I can slide it through the trunk far enough to keep it legal (within 4 feet protruding out-- state of OH). We are close to the lake, so no need for a rack! So much faster than the people standing around for 15 minutes trying to strap theirs to the top of their car!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great kayak! I have read reviews, tried out sit on and sit in kayak's for two years and this one had all the features I wanted. Dick's had a fantastic sale so I bought two, one for me and one for husband. They're comfortable, light enough that I can carry myself if not too far from the water. Happy to have found that the fishing pole holes will fit a golf umbrella to give you a bit of shade. I got water inside (left them on the lawn and the sprinklers came on) and tried to get the drain plug out but it is VERY stiff. Had to use pliers to grab hold and it broke. ($6.99 online to replace) So be careful if you need to pull the plug. Try to pry it up without damaging the kayak. That is my only issue. Love these things and can't wait to get them out on the water again.

How do you mount the swivel rod holder on the mustang 100x? I don’t see a base plate. Can one be added?

Asked by: Ben
We do not recommend to make any modifications to your kayak as this may void the warranty in that area. The swivel rod holders must be installed on a flat area on the top hull if you are still planning on installing them.

I just got a Pelican Mustang 100 and one of the tags says "Waterproof your devise before use"

Asked by: Tony
Yes, this is written on a picture of a phone. This just means that our hatches or storage compartments are not waterproof and your device ( your phone ) must be put into a waterproof bag prior to bringing it on board.

Is the Pelican Mustang a single piece molded construction?

Asked by: quahog
Our products are made from Ram-X material which makes our boats lighter, more durable and the most stable. They are 2 parts, top hull and bottom hull thermoformed together in extreme heat to create 1 kayak. Feel free to check out our videos from our site for more information! https://www.pelicansport.com/us_en/pelican-advantage#resistance

Did the Mustang replace the Escape? If not, what current Pelican kayak best approximates the characteristics of the Escape?

Asked by: Eric
While the Mustang is a great Kayak, it is quite different than the Escape. The model you would be looking for is actually the Sprint 120 XR, which is the same model as the Escape ( Both KNP12 models ) https://www.pelicansport.com/ca_en/sprint-120xr
