Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Starter Sit-In I bought this kayak to get into paddling. At 12 feet and with the V-Chine hull its long enough to get some decent speed. At 28 inches wide it is relatively stable as well, turns on edge well and performs well in all conditions. For lakes and rivers i would say it's ideal. I have been using mine on the ocean, close to the shoreline and it has worked well. With the large cockpit, you are more susceptible to getting flooded, and a spray skirt is more likely to implode in the event of a roll. The manufacturing of this Kayak uses Twin Sheet thermoforming, which is a superior method than the usual rotomold used in most of its competitors. The storage is good and the kayak incorporates some nice features for its price point. Be aware, like most modern kayaks this has no bulkheads and will sink if it becomes swamped, be sure to use float bags or high density foam to create bouyancy. In summary i would say this is a good starter kayak that you wont outgrow too quickly. If ocean touring is your thing you are probably not going to get a kayak from canadian tire, but for the majority of users this fits the bill.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this kayak Because of the hull design, the Escape 120x is faster, easier to maneuver, and more responsive than the Vanquish 120x (which I've tried). It's not quite as steady feeling as the Vanquish, but not tippy either. The Vanquish 120x will travel straight through the water better (because there is almost a keel at the back of it), but the speed of the Escape 120x means that it is less effort to propel yourself forward. Both boats are superior to the only 10' kayak I've tried. I love this kayak, but I would give it 4.5 stars because there are a couple of elements that are poorly designed. The placement of the back handle means that the boat hits your legs as you are walking, and there are no holes in the bow/stern for strapping the kayak to your vehicle. I bought anchor bolts but I will have to drill holes in the top hull. Despite these things I would choose this kayak again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall good choice. It's very light, it's also faster than other kayaks, I upgraded to a wider fibreglass paddle to better propel myself up river or in currents. Great through flooded treed areas, slides over partially submerged logs very well. Storage is easy and works very well. I pretty much torture mine, and it doesn't disappoint, although, I find it to be a lot of work to keep it straight. You will be constantly adjusting paddling pressure on one side or doing two strokes to one stroke on the other. Other than that, a fantastic product for anyone who wants to get into the sport!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for beginner or intermediate Purchased on sale from Canadian Tire. For a 12 ft kayak it's on the heavier side for one person to carry, but it's manageable. It tracks well on a river if you pair with the right paddles. I find that with a straight edge/flat paddle it's tracking is great, however, if you get a curved paddle (the farthest tips of the paddle are concave curved) you exert too much power with each stroke resulting in poor tracking. I also find it's fast even when going against the current. It's stable even from waves hitting the side of the kayak. The seat is very comfortable. I paddle for upwards of 3 hours with no issues. Lots of space in the cockpit for comfort and manuevaring. Adequate storage for safety kits, tools, camping gear, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value We have had our kayaks for 3 seasons now and think they are great! We have been on lakes and the river once. Also in a high wind on the lake. Tracks well, keeps up with more more pricey kayaks. It is quite stable and I felt safe in a bit of a \fun\" river ride! The only negative was indeed as others have mentioned the comfort of the seat. Bottom is fine but the back did not support well. We had 2 of the stadium seats that we take to games etc and pop them on the seat and that completely did the trick. Now have lots of back support and can paddle for hours!"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great recreational boat I am so pleased with this boat. We use ours for family recreational use, and this boat has surpassed our expectations. We kayak regularly and often rent them when on vacation, so we have had exposure to a number of different makes, types and models. This boat has met and surpassed some of our expectations. It is super lightweight and easy to carry. It has a lot of space making it easy to enter and space for a few lightweight items. We used ours the majority of time in the river with some shoreline ocean. This is excellent for river/lake kayaking. If we were to use it more in the deep ocean we may look at other options. Not only did we get some use with this kayak but we had some inexperienced family members test it out and they were very happy with the ease of use. It handles well, has excellent stability, is easy to maneuver and doesn’t feel tippy. It is very comfortable, with good knee guards, back rest and adjustable foot rests – which is important with a number of family number of various height differences using this kayak. There is lots of room and a cup holder (winning). Overall, this is an excellent kayak and I would highly recommend it. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very excited! I was extremely excited when I learned I got to test this product as I e always wanted to get a kayak! Immediately you could tell it was high quality and I was very excited to see how much dry storage there was! Being a novice kayaker I found this very easy to get used to, and became very comfortable using it. The seat was very comfortable as were the knee guards and foot rests which made my experience much more enjoyable. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Is the Pelican Escape 120x suitable for a 6 foot 5 individual

Asked by: Rob
I'm 6'3 and 272 pounds and fits me real good. Actually the footpegs adjust farther than I can reach them so you will definitely fit.

I see that there is modeled in line at the stern for rudder attachment lock, but I don see the black keel part to mount the rudder as on the sprint kayaks. It is compatible with your rudder controlled by footpads?

Asked by: martin
This model would not be compatible with the rudder as there is no keel extension for the installation. We do not recommend making any modifications to the kayak as this may void the warranty in the area you are modifying.
