Reviews & Questions

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a very good canoe I got this for my retirement. My wife and I live in the city, and we are close to the river. I needed something robust, stable, and easy to transport. We drive a Corolla, and it fits perfect on the roof rack. It loads and unloads great, and it is very stable in the water. My wife is not comfortable on the water, but she feels quite secure in this canoe. We picnic, and I fish, and we carry lots of things with us for a full day of activity. Lots of room, I love those seats with the backrests. All in all...a good buy. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good canoe for the money we bought this canoe on sale this past week, it is our 4th canoe, having owned a 14' Cadorette fibreglass canoe before, and then a 15' Coleman Ram-X and finally a Ram-xx Scanoe. This canoe is very stable, and as all Ram-x canoes, very durable. I was a bit apprenhensive about it not having a keel, but it handles very well, and tracks straight. We used it for fishing and with 2 adults, and our fishing gear, it sat nicely in the water. My biggest complaint is that there is no floatation of any kind in it,unlike all the previous canoes we had. I am looking into some form of flotation that I can add to it to make it safer in case of a capsize. Overall, a great little canoe, good price(on sale) and durable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good boat for money Bought this for fishing open water and a few tame river trips for my wife and I. Pro's are impact durable, comfy seats, centre seat works as cooler/ live well or dry box, rod holders ok, roomy and stable, cheap to buy. Cons scratches easy on gravel beach, no thwarts & seat configuration make sitting low to paddle near impossible, plows hard riding tandem or loaded, boat is heavy and has no yoke but centre seat is ok for solo carry short portage, no keel and high free board make solo paddle in wind difficult. Has zero flotation Summary it's a good value for the money, a good starter or family boat. Don't expect it to paddle or manoeuvre like a sports car. Has some creature comforts I appreciate. No flotation is something to consider.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good buy. Just bought this canoe and went out tonight on the river behind the house and we were very pleased. Until earlier this week my wife had never been in a canoe and I had not been in one for 37 years. So my wife is not super comfortable on the water and I'm in a wheelchair. Felt great to be on the same footing as everyone else! This canoe performed very well. Tracked nice. Very stable. Certainly large enough for us. Even with our big (6'-3") son on the middle seat. The seats are really great with backs and did not interfere with paddling at all. Centre "console" is a great idea for storage of items that are better kept dry. It's heavy but it is a great, tough, recreational canoe. Spent the big bucks if you want to go on big trips and are doing any portages. This is a great, inexpensive recreational canoe. Ed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for "average" families Why would I want to kneel to paddle when I can sit comfortably in a chair with a back to it? I'm not a voyageur exploring the tundra or doing long portages. I'm a father with kids who enjoys going camping and fishing. This canoe is perfect for guys like me. It has cup holders, 4 rod holders, and a built-in storage/cooler under the middle seat. What more do I need? I don't go through rapids ("slopids" are fine with me). It has a wide hull, so it is quite stable in the water (though there is a trade-off for speed). It is a bit heavy, but like I said, I don't do portages much. It is a very reasonable price. In fact, the Canadian Tire store I bought it at couldn't find one of the parts it came with, so they knocked down the price some more. I emailed the Montreal-based manufacturer and they said that part was under warranty and they sent me one for free by courier within a week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just add water Bought this canoe a week ago and went out for a 4 hour trip. Loved every minute of it. Handles both rough and calm water nicely. The back rests are fantastic but I will be adding a cushion to the seat on the next trip. The canoe is heavy so you will need 2 guys or purchase a wheeled cart to help transport it to the beach. I drive an F150 and purchased a bed extension that works with the hitch which makes life easy for transporting this 15 foot craft. I also have a high ceiling in my garage and have it on a pulley system 12 feet up out of the way. The bed extender, wheeled cart and pulley system makes loading and unloading a breeze. Just add water and have fun!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough low maintenance canoe I bought this canoe on sale and have owned it for 4 years. Good bang for the buck. Pros, its stable, the seats are suprisingly comfy and the back rest is nice, has multiple built in rod holders, the center seat makes a good icebox and live well, paddles ok solo, the hull is practically indestructible, weathers well stored outside year round. Cons, its really heavy, not a fast paddler or very manuverable canoe. Overall a great family or first boat, a utility or hunting boat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfy and Lots of Features I love how I can sit in this canoe for hours, due to its great sit-up chairs. I usually get a back ache in other canoes that are just the bench. It is nice that I can lean back and enjoy the ride or fishing trip. I also valued the cupholders so I could set my drink down when fishing or relaxing. There is still quite abit of room if you want to bring your tackle box or a smaller cooler for the day on the water. :)

The back rest are facing the wrong way. Can they be turned around and how? I just bought this from Canadian Tire and the seats are reversed.

Is there a carrier that you can recommend for this product? I am concerned about the weight of the vessel but would be primarily used for fishing and paddling around without portage.

Asked by: KDawg6
We do not have a carrier for this model. We suggest you visit your local fishing and boat shops.

I am interested in the Pelican Explorer Deluxe 14.6ft. Can the forward seat face astern instead of facing forward? There is not much legroom when it faces forward.

Asked by: sambo82
I read that someone did man over the seats so they were facing each other. So it is possible.

Just purchased new...(need some ideas for flotation, but I think I'll try an auto inner tube and/or large boat fenders attached to the outer hull like pontoons). Looking for a rowing rig and possibly a stabilizer system. Any recommendations?

Asked by: adstore
Since we don't manufacture these types of products, it's impossible for us to recommend items and brands as we haven't tested any with our canoes. Please make sure to read all of your owner's manual to prevent you from making any modifications that could void your warranty.

I'm looking for assembly instructions for the pelican 14ft 6 in. canoe which I recently purchased from a friend. It was improperly assembled by a local Canadian Tire store with the seats facing each other and I'd like to fix it.

Asked by: Rob
The instructions can be found on our website, on the product page under DOCUMENTATION. You can click on Parts List and the instructions are at the bottom of the page.
